We are thrilled to announce a truly special recognition for our CEO and Founder, Tyra Hawthorne, who has been named one of California’s Unsung Heroes for her remarkable impact on the community through her leadership at Heartbeat Music & Performing Arts Academy.
This distinguished award, presented at the California State Capitol by Assemblymember Dr. LaShae Sharpe-Collins, honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to their communities without widespread public recognition. It shines a light on those who uplift others, empower future generations, and create meaningful change through their passion and service.
Tyra’s dedication to community, culture, and education spans more than a decade. Her work at Heartbeat has not only amplified the importance of Black cultural arts education, but also provided life-changing opportunities for students and families across Southern California.
Under her leadership, Heartbeat has:
Enabled students to secure over $137,000 in scholarships this past year to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
Created platforms for youth to perform on stages across the country through groups like the Thunder Squad Drumline and Monarch Majorettes
Offered free, state-funded childcare to families in San Diego and Riverside Counties, removing financial barriers to early education and enrichment

Tyra’s vision has always centered on using the arts as a vehicle for empowerment, self-expression, and opportunity. Her tireless advocacy has helped transform the lives of countless young people—many of whom are now pursuing higher education, creative careers, and leadership roles of their own.
We are incredibly proud of Tyra for this well-earned recognition and deeply grateful for her continued commitment to our mission. Her legacy is a testament to the power of purpose-driven leadership—and a reminder that true heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes, they carry drumsticks, dance shoes, and a heart full of purpose.
